You mean, Autumn, that reading....what was that word f-f-foreen? newspapers will help us to better understand our country's politics? You mean reading an anti-American publication like The Mirror will give us a gritty and, although often unpleasant, accurate view of the things MSNBC won't tell us? What most people don't know is that NBC (including CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, HNN) is owned by General Electric and General Electric is a major corporate supporter of the "conflict" in Iraq.

Unfortunately, Autumn, this Friday marks the 8th anniversary of Columbine and we, here in CO, still haven't put the 25 victims of that atrocity to rest. It amazes me that something could happen to a person that would make them feel like taking 33 (or 25) innocent lives will make it better. My candles are lit. Hope you hear from your friends soon, if you haven't yet.

Why are so many Americans afraid to stand up and give their opinion? Dare I give that much credit. There is no opinion. Too many sit idly in front of television sets being spoon-fed 60- 90 second PKGs of month to year to century long controversies. The 6 o'clock news is our only civic duty, and when we've had enough, it's time for Sinefeld reruns.

Noam Chomsky said it best, 80% of the population has become "a bewildered herd." They simply don't care or care to know. Tabloids, sitcoms, and even the Super Bowl reinforce a passive, submissive culture, keeping “the bewildered” bewailed... allowing the 20% that make up our political class (i.e. Our Dear President) to do whatever their little hearts desire b/c accountability or instances like you wrote about above come few and far between. I don't mean to make our entertainment media the scapegoat for a passive and politically unaware culture... naturally there are many other social structures and influences that play into our country's passivity. BUT... it seems to me that our values are displaced, and the phrase I love to hate wins again... "Ignorance becomes bliss" when knowing the names of Flava Flav's 20 newest hoes takes precedence over the bloodshed in Israel.

I've led myself on a rant, but Ethan... you're right. "Ashamed" doesn't begin to say it...

Elton John wrote the soundtrack for my life. The first song that related to a "love" in my life was the single "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". I was only 15, she was pregnant, I was gay, she was controlling. At the time that song expressed my sentiment exactly. The current Elton song that describes me is "The Emporer's New Clothes" from the "Songs From The West Coast" album. I grew up on that music.
